The SGT research leans towards field-based problems but with strong complementary theoretical and laboratory research. Expertise and facilities exist for studies of rock fabrics, numerical and analogue modelling and experimental rock deformation.

Current field-based projects are geographically concentrated in the Alps-Himalayas orogenic system. Several projects involve close collaboration with members of the Petrology, Geochemistry and Geophysics Institutes at the D-ERDW. Process-oriented projects include studies of orogenic syntaxes, fold initiation and propagation, fold interference patterns, the development of crystallographic preferred orientations, high T flow of single and polyphase aggregates, high shear strain deformation and low- frequency. Numeric modeling projects cover the behavior of folding and wave propagation with Finite Difference or Finite Element Method.
